Bringing a Gargoyle Back to Life

I want to take this time to share a little bit about who is working behind the scenes at The Goth Shoppe. This is my mother, Vonda. She is an amazing artist and sculptor. With that, she has the skill to fix broken statues, or anything for that matter, and restore it to its former glory. Once she has completed a repair, you would swear it was never broken in the first place. Here's an example.

This gargoyle sat out in my yard for well over a year. It deteriorated to the point that once you touched it, it would crumble in your hands. The wing broke off and I thought surely it was destined for the trash. But, oh no! She had other plans. Below are images to showcase her amazing skills and the progression to the finished product. How cool is it to have a mother who embraces our Goth passions and bring this one back to life. Gotta love it! ❤ Thanks mom! #gothcycle #gargoyle #statuerepair #thegothshoppe #amazingmom

The Process

Fixing the Broken Wing and Cracks

The broken wing of the gargoyle...it was hollow and very brittle, peeling paint...a real mess.

The gargoyle with his broken wing. The hollow body and wing needed to be bridged with solid material and reattached. It's hard to see but a metal bolt was added to anchor the two pieces together.

The broken wing has been repaired and placed back on the body. Broken ears repaired, cracks filled in...time for sanding.

Sanding, Priming and Faux Finish

The real fun begins. A faux finish to make the gargoyle look like stone and aged to perfection. Nearly completed. After sanding, a custom textured base paint (primer) was made and applied.
